Analysis of Logo
About four years ago, I started to design a logo that showcases all the elements of Wing Chun. Some of the elements described in this breakdown may not be visible to the naked eye. The Logo needs to be rotated in different directions to see what may not be seen at first glance. With the help of my students (and friends) Matteo Melzi and Hao Ye, for helping me create this logo; and Graphic Designer Adrian Maione for digitising my dream, this logo has finally come together. Many thanks to you all.
The brush stroke that is separated into four at the start of the circle represent the four open hand forms
1. Sil Lim Tao (Little idea form)
2. Dai Lim Tao (Large idea form)
3. Chum Kil (Bridge seeking form)
4. Bil Jee (Finger Thrusting form)
The circle made by the brush stroke represents Four separate entities.
1. Wu Wei (No Mind)
2. The circular hand movements of Wing Chun.
3. The circular Footwork of Wing Chun.
4. The Rattan Ring
The Butterfly Sword which is the short-range weapon of Wing Chun
1. The blade of the sword with the horn going across represents the letter J the first letter in Jon.
2. The spine of the sword with the handle and the guard represents the letter P the first letter in Poole.
The triangle is formed by the Stick, the Long Pole and the spine of the Butterfly sword and represents Two separate entities.
1. Saam Sing Jong (The Three-star dummy).
2. Triangular footwork of Wing Chun.
The Stick is not a traditional Wing Chun weapon however, I have incorporated them into my teaching as it gives a more realistic feel than the Butterfly Sword to this day and age which it substitutes, as more of a contemporary weapon.
The Long pole which is the long-range weapon of Wing Chun.
The number 7 is formed by the two sides of the Triangle. The stick and the Long Pole and represent the 7 forms of Wing Chun.
1. Sil Lim Tao (Little idea form)
2. Dai Lim Tao (Large idea form)
3. Chum Kil (Bridge seeking form)
4. Bil Jee (Finger Thrusting form)
5. Muk Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy)
6. Bart Jarm Dao (Butterfly Swords)
7. Look Book Dim Kwun (Long Pole)
The Plum Flower represents the plum flower footwork and the Plum flower dummy (Mui Fa Jong) used in training.
The Wooden Dummy is the main training apparatus used in Wing Chun. This substitutes a partner or an opponent while training.
The outlined dot in the Wooden Dummy and filled dot at the extension of the horn from the butterfly sword are the artists interpretation of Yin and Yang.
Yin and Yang represents the internal and external, soft and hard, the flow and the crash of the art.
